When it comes to a mobile home, there’s always some slight confusion regarding how they’re classified. Are they just a standard residency property? Or are they a vehicle used for transportation?
Technically, they’re both. And because mobile homes are under that classification, a VIN has to be provided. If you’ve just purchased your mobile home or are looking to sell it, you’ll need a VIN.
Finding the VIN for your mobile home can be tricky. Today, we’ll be discussing how to find your mobile home VIN and its importance for your mobile home.
What Is A VIN?
VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number. It is essentially an ID that’s given to your mobile home. The VIN provides information about your property’s make and model and is unique to each that you may own.
The VIN has several digits that can be decoded when you take a closer look at it. Besides the make and model, a VIN also provides:
-
The manufacturer
-
The first three letters of the VIN
-
The state the mobile home was built
-
The next two letters after the manufacturer ID show where the mobile home was built
-
Serial number
-
A unique set of numbers that the manufacturer provide
-
Section code
-
This refers to the particular section of a mobile home and where you’ll find the data plate that includes other information
-
Single wide homes that only have one unit don’t need a section code
-
The letters A and B are used to differentiate between double-wide and triple-wide mobile homes.
Here’s an example of what a mobile home VIN would look like:
STENY876321A
-
STE is the manufacturer
-
NY is the state that the home was made in
-
876321 is the serial number
-
A is the mobile home section code

Finding Your Mobile Home VIN
As we stated above, finding your mobile home VIN can be very tricky. It’ll be even more problematic if you have a mobile home with multiple sections. However, there are two places that you can find your mobile home’s VIN:
-
Somewhere on the interior of your property
-
Outside, on the steel skirt underneath your mobile home
Each mobile home needs to have a data plate required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Once you find that data plate, you’ll find the VIN and other information.
Interior
You’ll find your VIN on the data plate, which can be in a few places such as:
-
A master bedroom closet wall
-
The cabinet doors of your kitchen sink
-
Near an HVAC system closet
There are also some cases where the data plate might be removed or painted over, so ensure that you complete an extensive search.

Exterior
If your VIN isn’t on the interior of your mobile home, then it’s time to check the exterior. There’s a steel skirt that surrounds your property.
Walk around and look for the triangular tow that transports your mobile home. Your VIN might be located on that. It’s about 3/8th inches in height and is stamped on the steel frame. If you can’t find it there, try the other side of your mobile home. Or move some materials that might be blocking your view.
Remember that if you have multiple parts to your mobile home, each will have its own VIN. They might not all be in the same place. Keep that in mind if you need to find the VIN at any point.

You’ve Mentioned Data Plate Multiple Times. What is That?
The data plate is a metal plate that you’ll find on the interior of your property. It has essential information about your mobile home, such as the VIN and:
-
The date your property was manufactured
-
Manufacturer’s name and address
-
A required statement from HUD
-
A list of certifications
-
The installed equipment
-
A map and reference of the wind zone, roof load, and snow load of your property
Make sure that you keep the data plate safe because it can help if you want to buy, renovate or sell a mobile home.
